Discovery and Profiling
The first step toward authentic data management
Data is the resource that fuels our digital economy, but most enterprises find it difficult to get value out of their data because they do not know what they have, where it is, or what it means.

An Overview of Data Discovery and Profiling
Data is the resource that fuels our digital economy, but most enterprises find it difficult to get value out of their data because they do not know what they have, where it is, or what it means. This problem has to be solved by enterprises that want to remain competitive and relevant in today’s competitive environment, and Global IDs provides the solution with its Discovery and Profiling capability.
Even a medium-sized enterprise today will likely have many databases containing tables that, in the aggregate, consist of hundreds of thousands if not millions of columns. These databases will typically be on all kinds of different platforms from different vendors at different version levels.
Global IDs’ Discovery and Profiling
At Global IDs, we call this reality the “data ecosystem” of the enterprise, and it is too big and too complex to be documented by human efforts. It requires automation, which is exactly what our Discovery and Profiling capability provides.
Global IDs’ Discovery and Profiling capability first find the structures of all the different databases across the data ecosystem. This is “discovery”, and it builds a single central repository with basic information about all these data assets.
Global IDs overcomes the multitude of technical differences among all the database platforms it scans to provide information in the central repository in a standard and understandable way.

Capturing What Data Elements are Represented Wherein the Data Ecosystem is Just the First Step
The basic metadata about database columns cannot tell you what the data in them means, although it can provide clues. A deeper analysis is required, and this is where profiling comes in. Global IDs can examine the data content of database columns to infer what it means.
This profiling involves data classification, inferring relationships to other columns (including across platforms), and deeper semantic analysis. The metadata from discovery is also leveraged, as is any human input too. The result is that Global IDs provide users across the database with a view of the entire data ecosystem with the ability to understand all of the data in it.
Global IDs Automation Utilizes Many Components, Including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Automation is key to Global IDs capabilities, and this is especially true for Discovery and Profiling. It is the only way to deal with the scale and complexity involved.
Global IDs automation utilizes many components, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to greatly reduce the need for staff to be involved in running the Discovery and Profiling component.

How It Works
Understanding the data that drives your enterprise – where it is, what it is, and its state of integrity. This is the first step toward getting control of enterprise data.

Know What You Have
What exactly is in all those systems and silos? The first step in authentic data management is moving from opaqueness to transparency. The Global IDs platform provides automated discovery of all your data assets, wherever they are.
Structured databases, cloud data, file system data, big data repositories – it’s all supported.

Assess What You Have
The negative impact of corrupt, invalid, and inconsistent data begins from its point of origin, degrading decision-making, operations, and customer service as it flows downstream.
Global IDs automated profiling provides the necessary foundation for data quality.
